Playscheme, the creators of bespoke outdoor play environments, has become the first ever recipient of the Young People’s Choice York Design Award for its work on Jake’s Treehouse.
The accolade, voted for by school children and under 18s, is in recognition of Playscheme’s work to create an outdoor play space in memory of four-year-old Jake Smith.
The Award was presented to Playscheme and Robert Wilkinson Primary Academy, home of Jake’s Treehouse, by children from the city’s Clifton Green Primary School. Playscheme started the project after our Managing Director, Steve Danby, met with Jake’s family and the school in 2017. Said Steve, “It was important to Jake’s family to create a lasting memory to Jake that would give something back to his friends and peers. That’s why we designed an educational and recreational space for children to learn and play in. Jake’s personality is reflected in the quirky angles, which give a sense of his liveliness and enthusiasm.”
The treehouse is elevated off the ground with a raised walkway, tree platform, clatter bridge, garden planting space and a sensory gazebo. The gazebo features coloured windows and lantern style sky light to allow coloured and natural light to flood in.
Jake’s family, Robert Wilkinson Primary and the Strensall community raised £31,000 to fund the £25,000 project, with the remaining money donated to charities Dravet Syndrome UK and York Inspirational Kids. Steve added: “The whole project is a testament to what a community can do when they get behind a family to support them. We’re honoured to have been involved and delighted to be recognised with the Young People’s Choice Award.”
